Why the Backwaters Are Unlike Anywhere Else
There is a particular kind of silence you find on the Kerala backwaters — not the absence of sound, but a layering of it. Frogs, oars dipping into dark green water, the distant bell of a village temple. You are floating through a 900 km network of lakes, canals, and rivers that has been the lifeblood of coastal Kerala for centuries.
The backwaters stretch across five districts — Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Ernakulam. Alappuzha (Alleppey) is the most popular base, earning its reputation as the "Venice of the East." But venture further into Kumarakom or Kuttanad and you enter a Kerala that most tourists never see.
A houseboat — locally called a kettuvallam — is the best way to experience all of it.
Best Time to Visit
October to February is peak season — the monsoon has washed the air clean, temperatures hover between 23–32°C, and the canals are full. Migratory birds flock to Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, and the water hyacinths bloom in brilliant purple.
March to May is hot and humid but significantly cheaper. Houseboats drop rates by 30–40%, and the crowds thin out.
June to September (monsoon) is for the adventurous. Rainfall is heavy, but watching a storm roll across Vembanad Lake from the covered deck of a houseboat is a memory you carry for life. Many operators suspend services in peak monsoon — always call ahead.
Kafira Booking Tip
Kafira Booking Tip
Book your houseboat at least 6–8 weeks in advance for the October–February season. Premium boats with AC bedrooms and open sundeck sell out fastest. Always verify the boat has a Kerala Tourism certification — it ensures safety standards, waste disposal compliance, and crew licensing.
Kafira Travels offers curated houseboat packages starting at ₹8,500 per night. Get in touch for group bookings and custom itineraries.
What to Eat on the Water
The onboard cook is one of the great pleasures of the kettuvallam experience. Fresh catch from the morning's nets becomes lunch — typically Karimeen Pollichathu (pearl spot fish wrapped in banana leaf and grilled over coals), prawn curry with raw mango, and steamed rice that absorbs every drop of the coconut-rich gravy.
For breakfast expect appam with stew — a lacy, crisp-edged fermented rice pancake served with a delicate coconut milk vegetable stew. It is one of the great breakfast dishes of the world and somehow tastes even better floating on a lake.
Do not miss: Fresh toddy (palm wine) tapped from the coconut palms lining the banks. Stop at a toddy shop in Kuttanad — a ritual for any first-time backwater visitor.
Practical Information
Getting there: Fly into Cochin International Airport (COK) or Trivandrum (TRV). Alappuzha is 85 km from Cochin — around 2 hours by road or a scenic 3-hour ferry via Kottayam.
Houseboat types:
- Standard — 1 bedroom, fan, shared deck | ₹6,000–8,000/night
- Premium — 1–2 bedrooms, AC, sundeck | ₹9,000–14,000/night
- Luxury — 3+ bedrooms, private chef, Jacuzzi | ₹18,000–35,000/night
What to pack: Light cotton clothing, sunscreen (SPF 50+), insect repellent (essential at dusk), a good paperback, and cash — most boat operators don't accept cards.
Mobile connectivity: BSNL has the best coverage on the water. Airtel and Jio can be spotty once you're deep in Kuttanad.

The backwaters teach you a different pace of time. For two days, nothing moves faster than a houseboat, and somehow that feels exactly right.
